The Story Behind the Bat Chair

The designer chair "The Bat Chair" is one of the greatest design successes of the 20th century and is now found in many households again. The chair was designed in the 1930s in Argentina. Inspired by a relatively anonymous, foldable wooden chair used by the British military, it is rumored to have likely inspired the "Egg" that Arne Jacobsen designed in 1958. Arne Jacobsen had a version of the Bat Chair in his cabin.

The Bat Chair won several design awards, and the director of the Museum of Art in New York bought 2 of the originally produced chairs, which can still be seen in the museum today.

Over time, the chair has received many different nicknames. Originally it was called BKF and later Butterfly and Bat Chair.
